Santorini offers you the chance to get to know more about the people and history of the volcanic island. Akrotiri is the site of an old civilization preserved by volcanic ash. Many claim this city is the mythical city of Atlantis. Whether that is true or not, you will be able to explore it and make up your own mind. Take in the buildings, the drainage system, and the different points that prove this city was prosperous and grand in its time.
Other villages you will visit on your tour include Megalochori with its narrow streets, Emporio, the island’s largest village with windmills, the ruins of Kasteli and Goulas, and a Byzantine fortress.
Your tour will also give you the opportunity to explore natural sites. Prophet Elias is the highest mountain on the island. It stands at around 2,000 feet above sea level. You will make your way to its summit to explore the Greek Christian monastery at the top.
Natural beauty is something you cannot escape in Santorini. Your tour will take you to a couple beaches that are really one of a kind. Black Beach gets its name from the black volcanic pebbles covering its shores along the Aegean Sea. Next up is the Red Beach, which is covered in red sand and red rock formations.
Finally, no tour of a Greek island can be complete without trying local wines. You’ll stop at the Venetsanos Winery where you will learn about winemaking and enjoy a tasting. From stunning views of the water to ancient villages steeped in history, you get a little bit of everything with this half-day tour.

My daughter and I spent a lovely day on Santorini with our guide Katherine and driver Alex. Katherine picked us up at the top of the funicular (we left our cruise ship as early as possible on a tender) and actually arrived a little early – a miracle. Our first stop was Oia, a gorgeous city with a wealth of blue domed churches to photograph and beautiful scenery. Katherine walked us up and down the main street, giving us history and anecdotes and taking lots of pictures of us since her hobby is photography. Pyrgos was a lovely, uncrowded town and the lunch at 41 on the Black Sand Beach was very good with a stunning view. A very relaxing day with a great guide and driver, followed by a long line to descend the funicular.
We booked online a half-day trip for a group of six people with Santorini private tours. They take us from JTR airport. The driver drove us to the hidden places of Santorini. The minibus was new with leather seats and very spacious, with good air conditioning. We had a great tour!
After hiking up the hill with mules everywhere (not a fun experience) our tour guide, Stefanos met us at the top and he and his driver took us on a wonderful tour of the island. We started out in Fira and then to Oia and although we didn’t see the sunset we avoided the crowds and got some beautiful pictures. We then traveled to the monastery at the highest point on the island, although cloudy it was fun. We then went to a black sand beach and had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant called Forty One on the beach. On returning to Fira town we saw a wonderful start to the sunset and after departing our tour and descending down the hill to the dock we saw another beautiful sunset. Stefanos and the driver (forgot his name) were knowledgeable and kept us laughing and interested the entire trip. Highly recommend this excursion. (Hint he’s from Canada)
